  • What to Expect During Your First Massage After a Car Accident

If youโ€™ve recently been in a car accident, your body may be holding more than just muscle tension.

After a motor vehicle accident (MVA), even a minor one, many people feel overwhelmedโ€”physically, emotionally, and energetically. Itโ€™s common to experience whiplash, back pain, tight hips, headaches, and anxiety, even if you โ€œwalked away just fine.โ€

Massage therapy can be a powerful part of your recoveryโ€”but we understand that your first session after a traumatic event can feel intimidating. At Blue Tiger Massage in Beaverton, our approach is gentle, customized, and trauma-informedโ€”so you can feel supported, not overwhelmed.

Hereโ€™s what to expect when you come in for your first MVA massage:

1. Youโ€™ll be welcomed with care and calm.

Our therapists know how sensitive post-accident care can be. When you arrive, weโ€™ll take a few minutes to check in about how youโ€™re feeling, both physically and emotionally. Thereโ€™s no rushโ€”we hold space for whatever youโ€™re carrying.

Youโ€™re welcome to share anything about your accident, symptoms, or whatโ€™s been coming up for you. The more we understand, the more we can tailor your session.

2. Weโ€™ll create a treatment planโ€”together.

Based on your check-in, your therapist will suggest a plan for the session. This might include:

  • Gentle neck and shoulder work for whiplash
  • Myofascial release for back or hip pain
  • Soothing touch to calm the nervous system
  • Thai-inspired joint mobilization for safe movement

Your consent is central to everything we do. Youโ€™ll always know what to expect and have the option to adjust at any time.

3. Your comfort and autonomy come first.

Youโ€™ll be invited to undress to your comfort level (or not at all). We offer fully clothed massage options and accommodate preferences around touch, pressure, or positioning.

Your therapist will check in with you before beginning, offering grounding breath or pause points as needed. Youโ€™re always welcome to speak up or request adjustmentsโ€”we honor your voice throughout the session.

4. We work with your nervous systemโ€”not against it.

A key part of post-accident care is helping your nervous system feel safe again. Thatโ€™s why we work slowly and attentively, listening for subtle cues from your body.

Even if youโ€™re resting quietly, your therapist is in constant communication with your bodyโ€”adjusting pressure, pacing, and flow based on your needs in the moment.

5. Weโ€™ll help you navigate insurance, too.

In Oregon, massage therapy is often covered under Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance after a car accident. If you have a claim number and a referral from your doctor or chiropractor, we can bill your insurance directly.

Need help figuring it out? Weโ€™re happy to walk you through the process.

You deserve care that meets you where you are.

At Blue Tiger Massage, we specialize in MVA massage, trauma-informed care, and nervous system healing. Whether youโ€™re feeling tender, foggy, or just want to feel like yourself againโ€”weโ€™re here for you.
